TV In All Its Glory

It's no secret that I'm a TV fanatic. Give me basically any genre of show and I'll give it a go! I don't really know when I started to veer towards TV more than movies but I certainly have my reasons! In fact I had an interesting conversation today with my physiology seminar TA about TV versus movies. He was definitely on the 'movies' side of our conversation and needless to say I was pro-TV. Indeed it's easy to see why people love movies so much! A-List celebrities, big budgets, great screen plays (calm down there Michael Bay, I wasn't talking to you) and of course international publicity (for the Hollywood blockbusters), these all contribute to what make movies so great. BUT! I am not here to discuss movies! I like movies and I have several favorite movies (including basically anything from the 80's to Pirates of the Caribbean) but TV tends to win in my opinion and that's what I feel like ranting about today.

Again it'll come as no surprise to you my dear Reader that I tend to obsess over certain shows. What better example than March this year when I decided to watch 'South Park'. At the time it had 14 seasons (containing about 210 episodes) and I finished it within roughly three weeks. This was including all my school work, labs, extracurricular and what have yous. I'm not bragging or anything (I'm not the American Dragon geez Madi) but I'd say that's pretty darn impressive. I recently watched season one of 'Breaking Bad' on Netflix in one night. Only seven episodes but they were each a full hour long. So what's the point here? I can fly through shows like nobody's business? Well yes and no. That is definitely something I pride myself on but it also goes to show why TV is so great. After an hour of watching, the characters are still there! They don't come to a conclusion in a two hour time frame like movies do, you get to watch them slowly progress throughout the series! It's for that reason that I can watch so many episodes without getting bored (unless the show is not appealing).

'But Victorialune, what constitutes a good genre of show?' Well my Reader, I'm glad you asked. As I mentioned earlier, I am not biased by genre and I will give you some examples. Let's take '24', the amazing action series following in 'real time' the life of Jack Bauer. What a guy! But I digress... Action is not usually my thing. In fact before '24' I'm not sure I had even watched an action show. Not because they were all bad before '24', but because none had really sparked my interest. Now that I've seen how good action shows can be (again, there are definitely bad ones out there), I'm more than willing to give one a go! Well what about teen drama? Surely there can be no 'good' examples of this! Although many of these 'highschool' related soaps fall flat I still defend 'One Tree Hill' (seasons 1-6 of course). It was an amazing show! Science fiction? Reader, I have seen every episode of Star Trek the Next Generation as well as Voyager and Enterprise (I know, don't ask). Anime, comedy, reality, drama, you name it and I will probably watch it. As long as the story's good, who cares what genre it is?

Now I'm not trying to convert any of you movie lovers out there! That's not what I'm about at all! Again as I mentioned earlier I do like quite a few movies (more than quite a few I'm sure)! All I'm saying is that TV brings so much to the table. The proverbial 'water cooler' in the work place will forever be plagued with chatter from last night's episode of 'Survivor' or back in the day, 'Lost'. This is because certain shows develop intense fans (I'm not excluding myself here...). 'Lost' and 'Survivor' are PRIME examples of dedicated fans. Although I didn't much care for seasons 4-6 of 'Lost', I stuck it out to the end just so I could figure out what all the hype was about (but to me, the ending was not satisfying, don't get me started here Reader). 'Survivor' has been running for 23 seasons and a 24th is to air in February! People often ask me how this show can STILL be on the air and I simply reply, 'demand'. There is obviously a demand for this island reality show or the networks would certainly not be airing it. And yes it has been a bit 'lack lustre' these past few seasons but hey, it's 23 seasons old! Give Jeff Probst and 'Survivor' a break!

Anywho, there's my little rant about TV. It was bound to happen eventually Reader! I'm surprised I didn't do it sooner. Speaking of TV, I'm about to watch this week's episode of 'Dexter', a show that EVERYONE should give a chance. Michael C. Hall, you had me at 'pulled pork sandwich'. :)

The Little Things

With my midterm season coming to a close (only three to go [out of ten]), I wondered how on Earth I managed to stay sane! Ten midterms is a lot of work! Not to mention all the assignments, labs and readings that go along with it! I know a lot of people get quite stressed out by exams but I've noticed through out my three years of university that I don't tend to get very stressed. Sure the occasional break down may occur but I can't pinpoint an actual moment in time where I've felt so stressed that it's impeded my ability to function. I have friends ask me how I manage to stay so 'collected' even though I have so much going on in my life, be it school, extra-curricular, work, volunteering or even trying to have a smidgen of a social life. All I can say is that I wouldn't be able to handle it without the little things.

It may sound silly but the Metro and the 24 Hours crosswords are one of those little things. Doing a crossword can seriously boost your self-esteem! You feel incredibly smart when you're done (even if you don't finish) and it also helps your brain stay active. For those that don't enjoy crosswords, Jess tells me Sudoku is quite relaxing. In my opinion anything with numbers is just asking for trouble! Oh well to each his own.

You had to know TV would be on this list! Yup even if it's an episode here and there, TV definitely helps me maintain sanity. It's like a little reward after/in between all the work of the day. I like to eat lunch while watching a half an hour episode of TV. That little half an hour is a great break for the brain and can really let you forget about stress.

Exercise, although sometimes tedious, can definitely help! I like to do exercises on my balance ball if I can't make it to the gym. That way even if I'm too busy to get my stuff, walk to the gym, workout then head home, I can just relax and work out at home. YouTube sure has some great workout tutorials!

SLEEP. Yes sleep is for sure one of my little things! I friggin' love sleep! I wish I could sleep in past 7:30am every day but unfortunately my 8:00am class kind of screws that up. Oh well, that's what the weekends are for!

Friends. Ok friends aren't really 'the little things' but even getting to hang out with your friends for an hour during the day can help with stress! (Unless that friend is Jess in which case stress rises! Haha, I'm totally kidding Jess!)

Wearing a nice outfit makes me feel on top of the world! It's on those days where you really, REALLY don't want to get out of bed that you dress yourself up nice and face the world with a smile (or a semi-smile what ever floats your boat). For instance, Mondays are the worst for me because, well they're Mondays. So today I put on a cute top, leggings and my new mukluks (SUPER adorable), did my hair all nice and purdy and left the house feeling just a teensy bit better about it being the dreaded M-day. (Seriously, try it Reader! Works every time!)

A stick of gum can make or break the day. When you're getting to the midway point of the day and you've still got lab then volunteering, a piece of gum can go a long way. Not only is your breath re-freshed, you have something to occupy your mouth. Yes, it helps pass the time.

Listening to your music while walking is one of my favorite things! Seriously, there are some songs that are just perfect for walking! They have that special 'walking pace' that makes you feel like you're in some kind of indi movie! I love pretending I'm in a movie when I listen to my music... I'm a dork, leave me alone.

Well Reader that's about all I can think of at the moment but hey, I'm sure I've got plenty of other tricks up my sleeve! As far as midterm season goes, continue onward citizens! God speed! We'll get through this one way or another! Besides, only a month and a bit until finals! Yikes!

Everybody Cut Footloose

Well Jess, here's my post about the new Footloose movie. Yes I was in fact planning on writing it yesterday but the fact that so many people were STILL talking about the whole Black Berry thing made me quite irritated so it got put on the back burner. But Reader, let me tell you that this movie should NOT be put on the back burner! In fact, you should go watch it right this instant! I can't believe how much I liked this movie and don't worry, I will share with you my reasons.

First of all, I am a girl of the 80's. Ok not literally (since I wasn't even alive in the 80's) but figuratively speaking, I am. I love 80's culture, music, fashion, you name it and Footloose is a CLASSIC 80's film! When I heard that they were going to remake this dance extravaganza I was all but impressed. The first thing that came to mind was that Hollywood had run out of ideas. Although true, this has been the sad truth for years now. So naturally next I thought, 'They are going to ruin a classic movie'. Fair enough. So many movies have been remade and so many of them have fallen flat. Need examples? 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', 'Godzilla', 'House of Wax (with Paris Hilton?! Come on!) and 'Wall Street' just to name a few. (There are numerous lists online if you need more proof.) But I digress. I was not excited about the new Footloose movie and I was afraid of what it would do to my beloved 80's film. I was wrong to be afraid. Not only did I LOVE this movie, RottenTomatoes (the website which hates almost every movie under the sun) gave it 73%! I was blown away! This remake was SO well done and I will now gush about it. For those of you who haven't seen the original Footloose and don't know the plot (seriously, Jess hasn't seen the original Footloose), there may be SPOILERS is this next part so be ware!

The characters were so well done! Ren was played perfectly in his city boy, 'I'm too cool for this hick town' act, Willard was hilarious (his dancing wasn't half bad at the end) and even Denis Quaid (who played the preacher) was good. Reader I don't know if you understand what I'm saying here. Next to Nicholas Cage, Denis Quaid is one of my least favorite actors. I can't stand him in films but he delivered an awesome performance! Not to mention they incorporated the actual music from the original movie and the dance sequences while managing to keep it modern! I definitely had a lame moment at the end during the slow dance when they played 'Almost Paradise' just like in the original movie. Yes Karina, I cried a little bit! They even had the confetti and the disco ball and Ren wore the classic 80's red suit! Ah, it was the perfect combination of déja vu and new meets old!  But for the most part I was squealing like a little anime girl because I was SO enthralled with the movie. Well done new Footloose, well done. Now if only Nicholas Cage could give up on acting, then the world would continue moving in the right direction. . .

Ps: I heard Zac Effron turned down the role of Ren in the new version of Footloose. All I can say is maybe he should have reconsidered. Also, when the heck are they going to make the Death Note movie?! Please Ryuk, help Hollywood out on this one!

BBM Goes Down: Mass Panic

I'm sure all of you heard about/experienced the recent loss of BBM (Black Berry Messenger)/use of internet on Black Berrys. I believe it was two days ago now when all of a sudden Black Berry started crapping out. It was of course fixed within a day but oh my goodness, did it ever have an effect on the world. Seriously, people were freaking out about this! I myself have a Black Berry (BB from now on in this entry) so I can account for this first hand (since I was one of the people freaking out). I feel the need to blog about this for two reasons which I shall now explain.

The first reason I feel the need to chat about this recent BB issue is that people were completely over reacting. The loss of BBM was not the end of the world. In fact it was anything but that! You see BBM is simply a form of texting only useable between BB owners. When BBM is not working you can still text/call your contacts with whom you'd normally use BBM. When I noticed that my BBM was not working, I simply texted my contacts and explained that BBM was down. Simple as that. Yes I was annoyed. Yes I complained. Yes I thought about throwing my phone in the trash and switching to an iPhone but still! The point is that BBM is not the only way to communicate on a BB. There were still so many options yet people were in full on panic mode! This made national news for crying out loud! Maybe it was a slow news day or maybe the fact that people were freaking out over something so small was worthing reporting on.

My second concern with this recent BB issue is more broad of an idea. To me, this simple one day incident was just that. A simple error that was quickly resolved and is now a thing of the past. Stuff happens and as far as quote unquote bad things go, losing our BBM privileges for one day was not all that bad. But we have become so dependant on our technology that something like this can quickly lead to panic. People were freaking out because one form of texting was taken away from them for little more then 24 hours. It's not like they were cut off from civilization (as I mentioned they could still text and call people)! Yet because of our need to use our technology, this was a serious concern for millions of people worldwide. I couldn't imagine what would happen if, for instance, texting became unavailable or even calling! What if the internet goes down for a day?! Could you imagine? I sure couldn't! I rely on the internet so heavily that I don't know what I would do.

Anyways, I'm sure some of you are still recovering from Wednesday's incident so here's my advice. Grab your BB, go onto BBM and chat with all your contacts. Let them know that you're alive and well and tell them that you appreciate them as contacts. Put a smiley face in your BBM status to assure people that you are sincere and by all means, put a happy song lyric in there as well. Go on FaceBook and make a status about how happy you are that BBs are back up and running! Better yet, go on FaceBook ON your BB, that way you'll be using your technology to report on your technology's well being. It will feel oh so nice! For those of you without BBs, you should be considerate of your friends with BBs. Sympathize with them by saying, "Geez, you sure are brave! I don't know what I'd do if 'Hanging With Friends' or iChat went down... You know because I have an iPhone. Have you seen my iPhone? It's shiny and new and from Apple and oh so shiny... iPhone..." That will certainly make them feel better! ;)

Sarcasm aside, I just felt the need to post about this! Happy to hear from me Reader? Leave a comment to show your love! Missed you guys, expecting to be blogging a lot more often! Thanks again for hanging in there with me!

Expedited? My Butt!

Hey Reader! I hope the first few weeks of school have been treating you well! As for me, they've been going pretty great. I unfortunately had to wreck my golden streak of attendance yesterday morning when I woke up with a headache and skipped my 8:00am Evolution class. Luckily it went away in time for me to make it to the other lectures and the lab I had that day. Anyways I feel the need for a good old fashioned rant so here we go! ;)

Like most biology students, I print a lot of stuff through out the course of one semester. Most, if not all, of our notes are available online to print and bring to lecture (with the exception of my favorite prof who makes us come to class and actually copy the notes from his overheads). This amount of printing requires a printer that actually prints. For a printer to print it must have ink/toner. My print needs toner. Unfortunately my printer is a few years old now (three to be precise, oh my God, I'm in my third year of university) and so it has become increasingly difficult to find the correct toner for it. 'Not to worry,' I thought to myself, 'I'll just oder it online and before I know it, I'll be printing to my heart's content.'

So I logged onto my Amazon account and searched for the toner. I found it and bought it with one click (such a nice feature that Amazon has). I also paid for expedited shipping because I needed the toner right away. Needless to say it has been two weeks and the toner only got here today and I ordered it September 8th. Um, I'm sorry but is that what they call expedited? If so I'm thoroughly unimpressed! I've been in contact with the supplier and I've asked to get a refund for the expedited shipping. I personally don't believe I should have to pay for expedited shipping when it gets here a week late. What's the point in paying? I could've just gone with regular 'free' shipping. It probably would've gotten here faster!

The worst part, to me, is that I've only ever had good experiences when ordering stuff online. It normally comes earlier than the day they first tell you and it has always been in good condition. I hope this was just a fluke because I do enjoy ordering stuff online. It's a great way to get birthday presents, Christmas presents, etc. Oh well, at least the toner is here now and I can start printing like a hard core bio student again! :)

The Fall Lineup

It's that time of year again! The fall lineup of shows is starting up and I'm sure you guys are wondering what's even worth watching at this point! I mean honestly, TV nowadays has really been boiled down to ratings and money and has completely forgotten about us, the viewer. I've always thought that if I weren't so into science I would've become a TV executive only because I love TV so much and because I feel like I'm in touch with what a good show should include. Anyways, this is just a quick look at some of the shows making a comeback this fall; which you should look out for and which you should just ignore completely! (Take this with a grain of salt considering everyone has different tastes! Also watch for SPOILERS folks! I'd hate to wreck stuff for you!)

I'll start off with 'Two and a Half Men' only because it's starting it's ninth season and I tend to have a rule about sitcoms going longer than eight seasons. That rule being that they shouldn't do it. This sitcom has been going on for eight seasons (which seems RIDICULOUS to me) and in all honesty it should've ended a long time ago. This show is the same joke replayed over and over again. We get it already. Charlie Sheen is a 'bad boy' who loves girls and his brother is the exact opposite. And of course now that Charlie Sheen has gone off the deep end what with his 'winning'/etc. they've replaced him with Ashton Kutcher. Seriously Ashton? Has your movie career sunk so low that you're joining the cast of 'Two and a Half Men'?! This should be interesting to say the least. I'll be surprised if this show lasts much longer than this.

On to a happier note, Dexter season six is starting up in October and I couldn't be happier! This show seems to get better and better and Michael C. Hall seems to get hotter and hotter. I'm told this season is supposedly going to focus more on Dexter as a parent and how he should go about raising his son which should be interesting. Also Lumen is gone which makes me over the moon ecstatic. She really didn't bring much to the show. I will always be confused as to why they killed off Rita though. She was the balance in Dexter's life! Oh well, less Rita means more Deb and if that's the case I'm alright. Deb is definitely a highlight of the show! So all you Dexter fans get ready for another amazing season!

This next show has made me laugh more than I'd like to admit but lately it's been losing its appeal in my opinion. 'The Big Bang Theory' is certainly a cult favorite at the moment and hey, I don't blame people for liking it! It's got everything a good sitcom needs! The only thing that makes me hesitant to be excited for the upcoming fifth season is Priya (Raj's sister). For some reason she just saps all the goodness out of the show for me! In contrast the new character of Amy Farrah Fowler brings something the show desperately needed (someone ALMOST as crazy as Sheldon). We'll see how this season goes but what can I say? I guess I'm old-fashioned since I want Leonard and Penny to end up together.

'COMMUNITY'! Yes it's back this month bringing us a third season chalk full of Troy and Abed in the morning! All I can say about this show is that it must be watched while it's still hot and funny. This is one of those sitcoms that could easily become boring and unentertaining so that's why it has to be enjoyed while it's still good. I strongly suggest watching this show! It's hilarious and I'll be the first to give props to Chevy Chase for his incredible performances in the show. Good characters, an original idea and paint ball wars! Who could ask for more?

This next blurb goes out to 'House' and 'Bones'. 'House' is bringing us an eighth season and 'Bones' is bring us a seventh. I used to watch House religiously but after about season five I lost interest since it was really just the same stories with semi-different plot twists. It's one of those medical dramas that capture your interest but then slowly fade away. I personally hope it'll stop after eight seasons (that way I can catch up and watch all the episodes I missed). I've heard from avid 'House' fans that the show is losing its lustre which is unfortunate. As for 'Bones' I'm going on what I've heard from my sibling and parents who greatly enjoy this crime drama. Supposedly the last season wasn't very well done and the show was threatened with cancellation. It will be returning in November (which is a strange time for a show to return) so I guess the fans will just have to wait and see. In my opinion Bones and Booth should just shut up and get together already!

'One Tree Hill' season nine will be premiering in the spring of 2012 and it will be the last season (thank God). As some of you may have read on my old blog site, I've already commented on 'One Tree Hill' and how it all went downhill (no pun intended) after Lucas and Peyton left. Seriously, why do they keep coming up with episodes?! It's gotten to be so sappy and predictable (more than normal teen dramas are) and the new characters suck (yes Hooligan [aka Julian]). At least it's ending. That's what I keep telling myself anyways.

As far as other shows like 'How I Met Your Mother', 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Criminal Minds' I hear they're still going strong but I'm not really up on them. I would think that Grey's will be ending soon but who knows? As usual I'll be watching 'Survivor' (yes season 23) because I still greatly enjoy it but hey, it's not for everyone. Anyways Reader, have a great year of TV and I hope you can find some new ones that spark your interest! :)

'Baby Steps'

As many of you are most likely aware, gay men in Canada (and definitely the states) are not allowed to donate blood. That's just how it is. Now to me this doesn't seem right not only because I'm an advocate for gay rights but also because it's a double standard. Here's my take on this.

Alright so basically what the Canadian Blood Services are saying is that gay men are not allowed to donate blood but straight people are more than welcome (if they meet the criteria required for donating blood in Canada). Their reasoning is that gay men have more sexually transmitted diseases. Okay... But what about all the straight people with sexually transmitted diseases? So they go on to explain that HIV is more prevalent in homosexuals which is definitely not the case anymore. I'm sorry, so you're telling me that a perfectly healthy gay man can not donate his blood? This makes absolutely NO sense to me for two reasons. The first reason is that there are tests done on the blood either way. So if the gay man who donated blood did in fact have a disease and had lied to Blood Services (which is a crime) or didn't know he had a disease, they would detect the disease (the same way they would detect a disease if a straight person lied and said they didn't have a disease). The second thing that bothers me is that there is ALWAYS a shortage of blood yet Canadian Blood Services can still be this discriminatory?! I realize that back before much was known about HIV/AIDS people were extra careful about the blood being donated but we know SO much more nowadays and we know that straight people are just as likely to have unprotected sex as gay people. It blows my mind.

Anyways, I was skyping with my sibling yesterday night (after finishing up about a million errands) and she brought something very exciting to my attention. It seems that the UK has recently lifted their ban on the donation of blood from gay males! The first thing I thought was, "Finally" (click to read the story) but then my sibling went on to explain that if the individual had had sex within the last year he would still not be eligible. That's why the title of this entry is 'Baby Steps' because even though gays are now allowed to donate, there are still MAJOR restrictions on how and when they can do so.

For those of you who disagree with my ideas, that's completely fine. I don't expect you all to have the same opinion as me, that's why it's called an opinion. That's all it is. I personally believe we should be following the UK's example but then again who knows how long that will take. Either way, I thought it was interesting enough to make an entry about it! ;)
