Some Songs Just Make Me Mad (Part 4?)

(Originally written: May 30, 2011) I'm thinking maybe I should change the title of these posts since most of the songs I've been talking about don't really make me 'mad'. Oh well, don't fix what ain't broke right? So I'll leave it for now. Just know that I don't sit at home listening to these songs all the while getting gradually angrier until the point where I go on a crazy crime spree. Because that has never happened... Nope. Never happened... Anyways! I've got some good songs to make fun of today ranging from country, hip hop, 90's pop and back to country. Give me a break, country music is really easy to make fun of. It's probably one of my favorite genres but that doesn't mean I'm against dissing it. So sit back and enjoy this quick release of song induced 'anger'.

Starting with Alan Jackson again... I'm again sensing a theme here. What can I say? I love the guy but his songs are just too easy to diss. I've chosen 'Where I Come From' because it's a song that I quite enjoy but it really is quite stupid. Reader, I think before reading this 'critique' I suggest YouTubing the song otherwise you will not understand what I'm talking about. Actually you should probably listen to each song if you haven't already heard them to avoid confusion. Anyways, 'Where I Come From' is basically about Alan travelling around and telling people that where he comes from is WAY better than anywhere else. I HATE people like that. I get it a lot living out of my home province. There's always that guy saying "Ya, it's way better back home. It just doesn't compare here." I personally find these people intolerable. We get it. You're proud of where you come from but do you need to diss everything that isn't exactly the way it is back home? Let's take a song example. Alan goes to a "country kitchen to try their brand of BBQ, the sign said finger lickin". The waitress comes over and asks him how things were and he responds "I'll be honest with ya m'am, it ain't like Mama fixed it". Geez. I don't know about you Reader but I'm one of those people who will ask "How's it going?" and expect either "Good" or "Alright" as an answer. I don't want your life story and I certainly don't want to hear about your problems if I don't know you. This is exactly what Alan's doing here. He's basically saying that because the food wasn't like "Mama fixed it" that it wasn't up to his standards. Now that's really saying something considering the chorus of the songs entails sitting on a front porch and 'pickin' (what ever the hell 'pickin' means) then moving on to the back porch sittin' and pickin'. Woah! What a life! Later in the song his car breaks down and some lady stops to help him. She then goes on to ask if he has plans for dinner (probably just trying to be polite and get him some food since his car did just break down). Alan retorts "No thanks m'am. Back home we like the girls that sing soprano.". Okay... So me and my sibling have contemplated what the hell that means numerous times. I have come to the conclusion that this woman who so kindly stopped to help him may have been a smidge larger than Alan liked so he said he likes soprano singers (normally quite thin little women). Wow. Either way, it really is a catchy song but it sure doesn't put Alan's part of the USA in a good light...
So this one is probably pretty obvious but it just couldn't be helped. For this entry's hip hop song I've chosen 'Grenade' by Bruno Mars (by the way I greatly dislike this and all songs by Mr Mars). The first time I heard this song I was greatly confused. I mean I've heard of devotion but this is taking it a bit far if you ask me. I mean seriously if I guy started telling me all this stuff I would start to wonder if he was a convicted criminal and if the FBI was out looking for him (or that I was in the plot of a season of 24). For example in the chorus he says "I would catch a grenade for ya, throw my hand on a blade for ya". Think that's extreme? Just wait. "Jump in front of a train for ya... Take a bullet through the brain for ya, die for ya." Wow this guy is serious! He'd jump in front of a train for this girl AND catch a grenade?! That's impressive. But I think the question we need to be asking is "When the hell would you be in these ridiculous situations unless, as I mentioned earlier, you are on the run from the FBI or a member of the 24 team?" The best part of the song is that the girl "wouldn't do the same", aka wouldn't catch a grenade/jump in front of a train for him. To quote Mr Mars he gave her everything he had and this girl "tossed it in the trash". I'd be a little scared too if this guy started rambling about all this crazy s**t! Seriously, the whole time I'd be picturing Nina or some other notable 24 villain forcing these situations upon us.

Onto 90's pop which I will note is my sibling's least favorite decade for music. The 80's rocked and then came the 90's where music really didn't go anywhere. There are OF COURSE notable exceptions such as BSB, Britney Spears and Ace of Base but really there wasn't that music good stuff coming from that decade. Either way, this song is called 'Hey Juliet' by LMNT and it's one of the catchiest 90's songs I've heard in awhile. (There is an EXCEPTIONAL key change in this song which Karina was kind enough to point out to me.) I don't have much to say about this song but I just wanted to point out that the guy trying to win over Juliet is a creeper. He will not stop until he's her Romeo (*yahoo*, it's in the song, give me a break). He's tried to "page her twice", yes that's right he paged her. Unfortunately the amazing technology of the pager did not impress Miss Juliet and she continues to ignore him. He then goes on to get his DJ friend to give a shout out to the girl on the radio. The shout out consists of "Hey Juliet, what are you doing next week?". Umm okay first of all I'm sure there are numerous Juliet's around the city and also could you be a little less vague please? If that was me I would first of all assume they meant someone other than myself and that I'd be in school/working next week like I do every week (what ever). I will give this guy props for resilience and hey, the key change doesn't hurt his chances in my opinion!

Back to country to wrap this up. I recently went back home to visit my family and me and the sibling were driving around town one night. We happened upon the song "The Man I Want to Be" by Chris Young. Chris Young is an awesome country singer with quite a few great songs but this one (in my humble opinion) wasn't that great. The lyrics were of course what got me right away. It was another song about a guy wishing and hoping that he could be a better man. Honestly boys, if you want to be better men just DO IT! NIKE STYLE! (Side note: I advertise quite a bit on this blog... Wonder if I'd ever get some free stuff! :P The answer: probably not.) Anyways in the song Chris is talking about how he wishes he could be stronger, smarter, braver, etc. and he's basically asking God to do it for him. I'm sorry, want to run that by me again? You're taking the time out of your day to ask God to do this stuff for you when you could be out there bettering yourself?! I mean it's not like I'm against people asking God for help, go for it! I'm just saying, he's not going to do it all for you. You have to take the initiative Chris! One of the last lines in the song is "Lord don't give up on me yet" and I just want to go shake him and say "YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF!"! God has lots of important stuff to do Chris. Just get out there and be a better man to the woman you love. I don't understand how something so simple can be so friggin' challenging! I know I said that lately songs I've been discussing haven't actually been making me mad but this one certainly did. Argh.
Well Reader that's it for this week most likely. I'm about to go out of commission for a couple days due to work. I'm really excited to finally start working on a more regular basis! Though I have been in a writing mood lately... Maybe you'll be hearing from me sooner or maybe not! Either way as always I appreciate you reading my nonsensical ramblings and I really appreciate the comments you leave! Without a Reader this is just me rambling to myself and that would be really lame... ;)
